Description: "On stems at base of, or up to 1 cm below attachment, some or all leaf-whorls [have] a whorl of (2-) 4 rigid pungent spines to 1.6 cm long, sometimes also with additional smaller spines below these... The peculiar spines on the stems just below the leaf-base, which are shared with B. meyeri, are not found elsewhere in Blepharis. ...in B. meyeri these spines are much smaller and much less regular." (from Vollesen, Taxonomic Revision of Blepharis, 2000.)
